SAAC (CG):
·
Construction of building is on schedule for 12/20/02 opening
· Construction is 2 weeks behind for the outdoor section
· There have been problems with the weather for finishing the tennis
courts and pool surface
WPEC Roof (CG):
·
Building Committee is interviewing 2 architectural firms Oct 31 and should have
one selected by Nov 1—both have done some work at Emory before (houses,
medical buildings, Hope Lodge and many athletic projects)
· Construction will include classrooms, locker rooms and offices
· They will also try to find out how the current damage occurred
· Amy Smith is assisting on the project
· The plan is for this phase to be finished by the Spring and next steps
will depend on funding .
· Some leaks need to be fixed ASAP
Americans for Disabilities Act (CG):
· Clairmont Campus has been reviewed regarding disability access issues—there are varying levels of ADA compliance
SAAC Fees (CG):
·
Todd Schill is fully in charge of the SAAC—he will take care of hiring
and budgeting.
· $700,000 budget
· Considering: non-Emory memberships, combined SAAC and WPEC memberships
(with a discount) – Future Committee item to talk to TS about fees
· Ideal situation would keep WPEC as the low-cost option relative to
the SAAC
· SAAC Director search is underway—Melissa Roberts and Chuck Gordon
on the search committee
· Want to keep student fees for SAAC and A & R separate because in
the long run, it makes it harder to raise the fees
· Todd Schill to have the numbers on budgeting, fees, income, etc
· Parking at the SAAC is an issue because there are no “guest”
spots
· The excess capacity in the UA Deck is likely to be assigned to the
Emory Hospital and Cancer Center in the next year
· We want to invite Erick Gaither or Bill Collier to the next meeting
to discuss parking concerns. Future Committee item
· Hossein Hosseinzadeh left the position as equipment manage; a search
has started for a replacement.
Victory Bell (RP):
·
Originally, it was proposed that teams that were nationally recognized for their
GPAs would be invited to ring the bell one extra time. The problem was that
not all sports have a national recognition medium.
· There were handouts of GPAs (Emory and UAA )
· Decision: If a team being honored at Victory Bell is in the top 5 GPA
for its last in-season semester, the team will get to ring the bell one extra
time.
For example, at the Victory Bell in September, if women’s tennis had been
in the top 5 for team GPAs for Spring 2002, the team would have rung the bell
one more time.
Varsity Athletes Committee (MR):
·
VAC met last week with 25 athletes present
· Issue of housing athletes at start/end of year and during winter break.
· Often athletes have to study for finals and move out of their rooms
before leaving for regionals or nationals
· In August, Emory athletes are actually missing a legal week of practice
while other teams practice
· They have worked with Todd Schill in the past. At other schools, students
are allowed to move in early
· In the past, they have paid for hotel rooms to house the athletes
· We want to invite Todd Schill to the next meeting to discuss this issue
· VAC also broached the issue of pre-registration for athletes because
they must finish their classes before 2pm for team practices—someone from
VAC to talk to the College Office about this.
· VAC also wanted to include a new varsity weight room in the roof
· VAC wants to bring on a strength and conditioning coach
· VAC supports the financial aid push RAP will meet with Financial Aid
Office Nov. 6
· They want to have greater support for students, faculty, staff and
administration
· President Chace has offered to meet periodically with VAC members
Peavine Creek Rd. (DM):
·
Meeting last week with FMD, SGA and students
· Summer baseball camps with 8-14 year-olds are the main safety concern
with the road
· A sidewalk from Fraternity Row to Chappell Field is ok with COE and
community, problems start after the field because DeKalb County regulations
of 75ft creek buffer come into play
· A boardwalk with a rail has been discussed for after the baseball field.
· Recreational Services thinking about doing a carpool day where no one
can park at Candler and everyone must be dropped off
· The shuttle idea was ruled out because the parking lot is too narrow
for buses to turn around and there are too many participants and the buses are
too small
· FMD has never been so helpful in this project and their proposed gate
was a great step in the right direction.
· Students were averse to the gate because it would have to be open so
often (for tournaments and deliveries, etc) that it would probably defeat the
purpose of it
· Rec. Services wants the Parking Office to ticket more regularly at
Candler as many people park illegally—invite Erick Gaither to the next
meeting to discuss
Financial Aid (RP):
·
Ruth to meet with Julia P (Head of Financial Services) next Thursday at 9am
to talk about athletes and Financial Aid
· There has been a proposal for internal Financial Aid Audits among Division
III schools
· SGA proposal on Financial Services was distributed
Dinner with Varsity Coaches:
· Dates in early December were discussed. Jean to report back regarding restaurants.
NEXT MEETING: Possible Tuesday or Thursday in November, depending on availability of our two potential guests
