Minutes of the Meeting of the
Faculty Athletics and Recreational Policy
Committee
September 21, 2004
The
meeting was called to order by the Chair, Ruth Pagell, in the Woodruff PE
Center (WPEC). Members present were Andrew Butler, David Edwards, Ron Johnson, Myron Kaufman,
Harvey Klehr, Vicki Powers, Polly Price, Eric Rangus, and Betsy Tanner; student
representatives Rohit Agarwal and Kari Schneibel; and ex officio members
John Arenberg, John Ford, Dan Magee, Mary Romestant,
Myra Sims and Betsy Stephenson.
Ruth
Pagell introduced the new Athletics Director, Betsy Stephenson.. Betsy reviewed the status of the WPEC
renovation. She has proposed some
changes in space usage, primarily in moving office space from the new rooftop
level and using this space for all the fitness equipment. Offices will be relocated to the lower
floors; current office space will be renovated. More funding will be needed to complete the classrooms, locker rooms
and athletic training room. The open
common areas will recarpeted over Fall Break.
The arena floor is scheduled to be redone next summer. The current fence around the soccer field
will be replaced with a wrought iron one.
Discussion
of funding for Athletics and Recreation included creating a yearly annual fund
to which alumni, parents, and friends could contribute, and the significant
income derived from facilities rental by groups outside of Emory
University. Members were provided with
a list of fundraising concepts to consider.
Vicki
Powers briefed members on the progress of the Classroom Absence Task
Force. A process has been set up with
Dean Tom Lancaster to handle missed classes for athletes. For the 2004-05 game and travel schedule,
the golf and tennis teams will miss the most class days. This subcommittee will continue for the
coming year.
The
Winter Break housing conflict for student athletes is being resolved.
John
Arenberg reported on the improved and easier-to-navigate athletics web site,
which should be useful as both a recruiting and a fundraising tool. A direct link to the Association of Emory
Alumni was suggested.
Respectfully
submitted, Betsy Tanner
