Minutes of the Meeting of the
Faculty Athletics and Recreational Policy Committee
September 18, 2000

The meeting was called to order by the Chair, Ruth Pagell. Members present were. Steve Batterson, Meredith Curtin, Ronald Johnson, Edith Murphree, Polly Price, and Betsy Tanner. Ex Officio members present were John Arenberg, Chuck Gordon, Dan Magee (Coordinator of Recreational Services), and Jennifer McDowell.

John Arenberg, Sports Information Director, reported the following win/loss records and the national rankings for the varsity teams. The teams are off to a great start.

Men's Cross-Country Team: 18-10 21st

Women's Cross-Country Team: 18-13 23rd

Men's Soccer: 3-2 not ranked

Women's Soccer: 6-1 24th

Women's Volleyball: 11-1 11th

Chuck Gordon, Athletic Director, reported on the following items.

· The Athletics and Recreation Department is fully staffed. Dan Magee was introduced as the new Coordinator of Recreational Services. Rounding out the Recreational Services staff are Lynn Nester, Assistant Coordinator and Damien Patton, Programmer. Mary Romestant has been appointed to the assistant facilities position.

Amy Smith (tennis) and Mike Twardoski (baseball) are no longer interim coaches but have been hired as the head coaches for their respective varsity teams. There are a numbers of new interns helping with coaching and sports information.

· The Woodruff PE Center renovation plans for removing the tennis courts, enclosing the roof, and stopping the leaks include weight room facilities, offices and classrooms.

· University Apartments renovations are on schedule. All the garden apartments have been demolished.

· There is now a press box overlooking the soccer field/outdoor track.

· At the softball field the construction of the building to house locker rooms and restrooms has begun and should be completed by January. A press box will be built on the roof of Peavine Deck.

· The tennis court situation at Emory is becoming critical. Those proposed for Emory West will not be built due to neighborhood opposition. When those on the PE Center roof are removed, the University will be left with six courts, down from a maximum of seventeen. The eight courts to be built at University Apartments (two clay and six hard surface) will not be finished before the roof ones are removed.

Ruth reported that the search for the new Vice President for Campus Life was nearly finished, with a list to be submitted to President Chace today.

Proposed meeting topics for the year were discussed, with student health insurance (Janie Latoza, Coordinator of the Student Health Clinic and Brian McGuire, Asst AD for Sports Medicine) and Campus Life development chosen for meetings tentatively scheduled for October 30 or 31 and November 20 or 21. Gender equity and a varsity women's crew team were discussed. The form for the NCAA institutional self-study will be circulated to committee members prior to the next meeting.

Respectfully submitted, Betsy Tanner
