Minutes of the Meeting of the
Faculty Athletics and Recreational Policy Committee
September 17, 2001

The meeting was called to order by the Chair, Ruth Pagell. Members present were Steve Batterson, Meredith Curtin, Ronald Johnson, Jean Jordan, Myron Kaufman, Edith Murphree, Vicki Powers, Betsy Tanner, Angie Ahlquist, and Ryan Muetzel. Ex Officio members present were John Ford and Chuck Gordon.

Ruth welcomed the new members of the committee and worked out a reshuffling of the liaisons to the varsity teams.

Varsity Athletics, SGA: Ryan reported that the varsity athletes are happy with the newly-installed lighting on the soccer field. Varsity athletes are interested in having the lab component of the required Principles of Physical Fitness course waived, as varsity workouts easily take the place of any conditioning achieved in the PPF course. For now the Faculty Athletics and Recreational Policy Committee will not get involved in the discussions. Also, the varsity weight room needs improvement.

Club Sports and Recreation: Angie reported that Outdoor Emory Organization's Adventure Orientation sponsored twelve trips, with ten to forty freshmen on each trip, in August prior to freshman orientation.

SPORTS UPDATES: Sports updates during the coming year will be circulated electronically by John Arenberg, Sports Information Director. The suggestion was made to post results and upcoming events on a bulletin board at the Woodruff PE Center (WPEC).

FACILITIES: Chuck gave a facilities update. The soccer field lights have two settings - partial for the running track and full for varsity contests. The new roof on the PE Center has been delayed past summer 2002: interim repairs will be made. The current estimate is $10.5 million for the repairs and a little expanded program space. The athletic facility at Clairmont Campus (formerly known as University Apartments Campus) is in the final review of the 100% construction blueprints. Construction should begin in late October or early November, with the opening December 2002 or January 2003. With the increased facilities, the membership costs for the WPEC as well as the Clairmont Campus facilities may increase.

Oxford College has joined the National Junior College Athletic Association. They will take into consideration the NCAA rules so their athletes will be eligible to play with the Emory University varsity teams. Emory seems to be the only school nationwide that faces this predicament, and is working with NCAA on these issues.

Given the makeup of the current varsity teams at Oxford, it looks as though they will be neutral in terms of gender equity.

ADVERTISING AND PROMOTIONS: Several members met over the summer to address the promotion and advertising of commercial products at WPEC. Advertising banners hanging from the railings of the indoor track at WPEC are to be flipped back during non-athletic events. The committee is seeking legal direction for the right to solicit some sponsors and refuse others.

UPCOMING MEETINGS:
Suggestions for guests and topics at future meetings included Bob Hascall (Facilities Management), Bill Fox (Institutional Advancement) and the Campus Development Committee.

The next meeting of the Committee is tentatively set for October 18 at 4:00 P.M. in the Woodruff PE Center Conference Room.

Respectfully submitted,
Betsy Tanner
