Campus Development Committee

Annual Report

August 2003-April 2004

The Campus Development Committee (CDC) continued to review new building projects, site locations and road development to keep within the Master Plan guidelines.  We made every effort to provide constructive feedback on proposed and active projects that would affect the appearance and condition of the campus.

Two major issues developed throughout this past year which the CDC spent much time discussing:   the Alliance to Improve Emory Village (AIEV) plans and the impact they will have on the campus and the creation of a Public Art Review Committee.

Emory Village:  The CDC has been continually updated regarding the AIEV plans towards improving the Village community.  The major initial change is to create a road diat and roundabout, to slow down vehicular traffic and increase pedestrian safety.  The CDC was concerned about the initial plan and the result it would have on the traffic into and out of the campus.  The traffic study suggested additional traffic would be placed on Dowman Drive. Therefore we asked for them to develop another plan, since Dowman has become increasingly more pedestrian with the opening of the Math &Science Center and the increase in pedestrian traffic to the village.  The AIEV considered the request and are proposing a change to develop an alternate scheme to move N. Oxford Rd into the roundabout and Dowman Drive would then become a one-way entry road into the campus.  Parking on both sides of Dowman between Fishburne and S. Kilgo Drive would be eliminated.  This result would allow the traffic flow to and from campus, from Peavine Parking Decks, to be able to access the roundabout and not have to use Dowman.  Also, the appearance of Dowman could be upgraded as true entrance to the campus.  We now feel the AIEV are working well with Emory to ensure the campus needs and concerns are being met.

Public Art Sub-committee.  Another major focus of the committee was to begin the process of developing a Public Art Review sub-committee.  This request came from the Board of Trustees to form a committee to establish a review and approval process for all considered gifts, donations and opportunities for the addition of art (sculptures, painting, murals, fountains and site amenities).  The sub-committee will also review all temporary exhibits for exterior locations that will be placed for more than 2 weeks.   The process is still under review but currently is as follows:

  • Art sub-committee makes recommendation to the CDC.
  •  If approved, it is brought tot he Presidents Cabinet.
  •  If accepted, then brought to the COE and Accessibility Committee for site review.  .
  • Then back to CDC.  If approved recommend to the REBG subcommittee of public art.
  • This REBG sub-committee will make recommendation to full Trustee REBG.
