Dear Members of the Emory Community,
Welcome to the University Senate website.
Thanks for your interest, and we hope that you will find the information you seek here.
Emory University enjoys a unique and productive governance system (see the By-Laws link). The Senate represents every constituency of the university: students, alumni, staff, deans, faculty, and administrators. It is a forum for communication, discussion, review, and consideration of initiatives and proposals in any area of policy or other matter that affects the university as a whole. Elected representatives are expected to carry information and points of discussion back to their constituencies to enhance communication, bring feedback, and through continuous iterations, build a sense of shared purpose. Nine committees of the Senate consider issues in particular areas such as campus development, transportation and parking, athletics and recreation, libraries, campus life, the natural environment, honorary degrees, safety and security, and fringe benefits.
This year, the Senate will be addressing sustainability efforts and honoring members of the Emory community for their volunteerism. They also will be focused on enhancing bidrectional communication with the constituency groups that they represent.
Unlike some other universities, the President does not preside over the Senate. Instead, the President and Provost are ex officio members of this body. Their regular participation – along with other administrators – strengthens dialogue about initiatives and challenges of the university, keeps lines of communication flowing, and builds trust in our common work. The Senate President, along with other members of the Executive Committee, formulates the agendas for monthly meetings and helps to steward key Senate initiatives.
Please let us know what other information would be helpful, and thanks again for your interest and support.
Sincerely,
Steve D. Culler, PhD
Senate President
