UACT Visiting Speaker Series
Spring 2004

Peter Elbow
"Writing as High Stakes, Writing as Low Stakes: Improving How We Assign and Respond to Writing."

Emeritus Professor of English, University of Massachusetts, Amherst

Thursday, Februrary 19th, 4-6 p.m.
Rita A. Rollins Room, School of Public Health

Professor Elbow will focus his discussion squarely on what he sees are the needs of teachers from all disciplines. More specifically, he will address how to use writing to increase the amount and depth of writing in courses not focused on teaching writing. He will distinguish between high stakes writing and low stakes writing and the need for balance among them. He will first take part in a casual lunchtime discussion with a few select faculty, and then will give a public lecture on the aforementioned topic. This lecture will culminate in a reception and book signing.
