Sexual Health Resources FAQ

Q:  What sexual health services are available at Emory University Student Health Services (EUSHS)?

A:  EUSHS offers annual sexual health exams for men and women (including pap tests), testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections, anonymous HIV antibody testing, contraceptives, emergency contraception, pregnancy testing, colposcopy (recommended for some women who have abnormal pap tests), and sexual health education.

Q:  I just have some questions about sex.  Is there someone I can talk to?

A:  Yes!  You can talk with our Sexual Health Educator, by phone or by appointment in person.  She can be reached at 404-727-7312.

Q:  Does EUSHS offer testing for sexually transmitted infections (STI’s)?

A:  Yes!  We offer anonymous testing for HIV, plus confidential testing and treatment for all other STI’s, including syphilis, herpes, chlamydia, gonorrhea, genital warts/HPV, and others.  There are fees for lab work and medications.  Call 404-727-7551, option 1 to schedule confidential STI testing.  For anonymous HIV, call 404-727-7551, option 2. When you talk with the Patient Scheduler, specify whether you want HIV testing only or testing for other STI’s.

Q:  How can I get a routine annual gynecological exam or men’s health exam?

[pills] A:  Call 404-727-7551, option 1.  We allow plenty of time for these visits so you and your clinician can discuss your concerns fully.  Our clinicians focus on reproductive and sexual health concerns of students, including giving extra “TLC” to women having a first pelvic exam.

Q:  What methods of contraception can EUSHS provide?

A:  We can prescribe birth control pills (oral contraceptives), NuvaRing®, Depo-Provera® (shot), and diaphragms.  Contraceptive pills, rings, and injections can be purchased at EUSHS.  Other prescription methods can be purchased at pharmacies.   Condoms do not require a prescription and are available without charge at Student Health Services (see below).

Q:  Does Student Health Services offer Emergency Contraception?

A:  Yes. A prescription is needed for women aged 17 and younger, this can be arranged at Student Health, or it may be purchased at Student Health following your visit with the Health Care Provider.  Women aged 18 and over do not need a presecription for Plan B and can buy it at a pharmacy or at Student Health during your visit with the Health Care Provider. Emergency Contraception (EC) reduces the risk of pregnancy when other methods of birth control are not used or are used incorrectly.  EC is most effective when taken within 12-24 hours after unprotected intercourse, though it can be taken as much as five days afterward.  Many women keep EC on hand in case it is needed unexpectedly.  Plan B is not intended to be used as routine pregnancy prevention, does not cause abortion, and does not prevent STI’s.

Q:  Can my parents find out about my sexual health visit to Student Health Services?

A:  EUSHS is very protective of your privacy.  We release your medical records only with your specific, written permission or under very limited other circumstances required by law.  In Georgia , minors can obtain contraception and STI care without parental involvement.  However, if you pay for lab work or medications using your parents’ insurance, their insurance company will send an itemized statement to your parents, since they are the policyholders.  If you would rather that we not bill your parents’ insurance, we can bill you directly.  If you have the Student Health Insurance Plan, you are the policyholder, so your parents will not receive a billing statement.  Please talk with our our Insurance Specialist at 404-727-5632, for more information.

Q:  Does EUSHS perform abortions or prenatal care?

A:  No.  We are not equipped for these services.  Upon request, we refer interested students to resources in the community.

Q: What safer sex supplies does Student Health Services offer, and what do they cost?

A:  We have a variety of styles of male latex condoms, plus dental dams, lubricant packets, and polyurethane male condoms.  They are all available FREE for Emory students.

Q:  Free?

A:  Yes, FREE!

Condom

Q:  Where can I get some?  Condoms, I mean, and other safer sex supplies? I just need a handful for myself.

A:  At EUSHS, of course!  Stop by the front desk on the second floor, and ask the Patient Scheduler.  Latex condoms are available in every exam room at Student Health Services, plus in the Health Education area.  We regret that we cannot put bowls of condoms in the waiting room, since we share that space with The Emory Clinic.

Q:  I want a bunch of condoms and informational brochures for my student group (residence hall, fraternity, sorority, club, etc.).  Can you make it happen?

A:  Yes!  Please email corey.anderson@emory.edu with your request.  We’ll have your goodies ready for you to pick up within a day or two.  Pick up your materials at Room 103D, on the first floor of the 1525 Clifton Rd. Building.

Q:  My group wants a speaker about sexual health (safer sex, birth control, sexual communication & decision-making, sexually transmitted infections, etc.).  Do you have anyone who can give these kinds of talks?

A:  Yes!  We have a Sex Educator on staff in Health Education and Promotion.  She will work with you to custom-make a presentation that meets your group’s needs.  By the way, Health Education and Promotion also includes professional staff that can address Nutrition, Alcohol and Substance Abuse, Tobacco, and Wellness topics.  Email shirley.banks@emory.edu with your program request.
