FINANCIAL POLICY/STUDENT RESPONSIBILITY

Payment is expected at the time service is rendered.  We accept cash, check, Emorycard, Visa and MasterCard.  All unpaid charges will be transmitted to the Emory University Bursar to be included on the student's central account.  The Bursar will bill you for any unpaid charges.

EUSHS only participates in the Emory endorsed student insurance plan.  We are non-participating in all other plans.  We will file charges incurred at EUSHS with your primary insurance carrier.  Since we are non-participating, your carrier may not pay for these charges.  We will provide you copies of all relevant paperwork you will need to resolve any issues with your carrier if they arise.  We will wait 90 days from the date of filing the claim to receive payment.  If the charges are unpaid at the end of 90 days, we will transfer the balance to the Bursar’s office for billing on your student account.

You are responsible for paying the bill in full and obtaining reimbursement from any secondary health insurance company.  We will assist you in preparing the necessary forms to expedite repayment of your insurance claim, but we do not coordinate benefits (i.e., file a claim or send in the form) with secondary insurance companies.
We will not enter into a dispute with your health insurance company over your claim; this is your responsibility and obligation.  We will file your claim (primary coverage) one time.  Upon request, we will supply you with a copy of the claim, so you can resubmit if necessary.

You must provide us with your current health insurance cards or completed claim forms so we can file your claim.  A financial policy statement similar to the above information must be read and signed by each student prior to his or her EUSHS evaluation, once per academic year.

INSURANCE

THE EMORY/AETNA STUDENT HEALTH INSURANCE PLAN

Emory University requires that all degree-seeking and all international students either have health insurance or purchase the University-sponsored plan.  In order to meet this requirement, you must either choose to enroll in the Emory Student Health Insurance Plan or successfully complete the waiver process on-line.  If you choose to enroll in the Emory student plan, you will be charged via Student Financial Services.  For more information about the Emory health insurance requirement, click on “Student Insurance Requirement Information.”

The Emory University Student Health Insurance Plan will once again be offered by Aetna Student Health of Boston, MA.  Aetna is one of the largest health insurance companies in the nation and is a name that students and their families recognize and can trust.  The 2008-09 Emory/Aetna plan features the following:

  • A national preferred provider network of over 610,000 providers and over 3,700 hospitals, which includes all Emory outpatient and hospital facilities.
  • Students do not have to personally complete and submit claim forms for care received.  The provider submits bills directly to Aetna.
  • There are no pre-existing condition exclusions under the Emory/Aetna student plan and no waiting period for coverage to begin.
  • The plan covers 100% of covered medical expenses at Emory Student Health Services, including the on-site EUSHS Dermatology and Gynecology/ Colposcopy clinics (after specialist $25 co-payment), immunizations, TB skin tests and Travel Clinic.
  • The plan covers 80% of negotiated charges outside Emory University Student Health Services (EUSHS) and within the Aetna network (which, once again, includes all Emory facilities).   There is a $100 total annual deductible in-network and a $25 co-pay for physician visits outside EUSHS.   Outside the Aetna network, coverage is 60% with a $200 annual deductible.
  • All non-emergency specialist care must first have a written referral from the Student Health Service, unless you are more than 50 miles away from Emory or the EUSHS is closed.
  • The plan offers outpatient prescription pharmacy coverage up to $1,500 (after co-pays) and $500 of coverage at EUSHS (which includes oral contraceptives).
  • Mental health outpatient and inpatient coverage has no cap on coverage, including treatment for alcohol and substance abuse.
  • Coverage is also available for student's spouse, qualified domestic partner and children.

Please be aware the Emory/Aetna Student Health Insurance Plan meets, and in most cases significantly exceeds, the required student insurance coverage minimums.  To read the 2008-09 plan brochure, go to www.aetnastudenthealth.com, click on Student Connection, choose Find Your School and enter Emory University.

Also, be aware that some private insurance policies will not cover services provided by the EUSHS, nor will they cover dependents beyond certain age limitations. You are strongly encouraged to review your private health insurance coverage and become aware of special requirements and provisions of your plan, such as pre-admission certification, medical benefits and prescription coverage.  Once again, it is important (and required) that Emory students have insurance coverage that will provide them with access to healthcare in Atlanta, and not just in your home community or state.

If you have questions about insurance, EUSHS fees and billing practices or the online student insurance requirement waiver process, please contact our Student Health Services Insurance Office at mandatoryinsurance@listserv.cc.emory.edu, or by phone at 404-727-7560 or 404-727-7284.

APPOINTMENT NO SHOW FEES

Appointments in our Emory University Student Health Services (EUSHS) specialty clinics in Dermatology, Gynecology/ Colposcopy, Women’s Health, Psychiatry, Nutrition and Travel are highly sought after by students, which makes appointment availability extremely limited.  When a patient schedules an appointment and does not keep it, he/she is denying another student access to that specialty service, woman’s annual exam or physical exam.  In addition, EUSHS pays the faculty Dermatologist and Gynecologist, Nutritionist, Psychiatrist and Travel Nurse whether patients show up for appointments or not.

Therefore, EUSHS will charge students for certain types of no show appointments. The charge to students for these no show appointments can range from $16.00 to more than $50.00, depending on the type of appointment. The following appointments will be subject to these no show fees:

      • Dermatology
      • Gynecology/Colposcopy
      • Nutrition
      • Physical Exams and Annual Wellness Exams
      • Psychiatry
      • Travel Clinic
      • Women’s Annual Exams

In order to avoid a no show charge, the student must cancel the appointment at least 24 hours prior to the scheduled appointment.  Please call (404) 727-7551 and select Option 1 (day or night) to cancel your appointment.  In addition, students who have three or more no show appointments may be excluded from future appointments at these specialty clinics.  We thank you for your cooperation and for your consideration of your fellow Emory students.
