Emory is expanding through a $600 million construction
boom aimed at improving existing facilities and creating several new
ones. During the next few yearswith the guidance of the campus
master planeight major buildings will be in construction, including
a science classroom/laboratory facility, a new nursing school, a medical
research building, a cancer institute, a hospital redevelopment project,
an arts center on the Oxford campus and one on the Atlanta campus, and
student housing/recreational facilities. In addition to new construction,
teaching spaces are being updated and enhanced throughout the campus.
From
year to year, Emorys construction budget varies as projects are
initiated and completed. During the past decade, however, Emorys
building projects have played a significant role in the local construction
economy.
In 1999 Emory spent $62.6 million on construction
projects, at a time when many of the upcoming projects were in the planning/development
stage. That represents 17 percent of the $362 million spent in DeKalb
County for individual, business, and industry construction during the
same period. Indirectly these projects yielded another $142.6 million
to benefit Atlantas economy.
