The
University spent $1.33 billion in metro Atlanta in 1999 on payroll,
direct purchases, and construction. Spending by students, visitors,
and retirees on everything from groceries and clothes to movie tickets
bumped the figure up to $1.5 billion. The ripple effect of that spending,
as employees in those industries earned paychecks and made their own
purchases, raises the economic impact of Emory dollars to nearly $3.4
billion. In the past five years, Emorys total economic impact
has increased 39 percent, and in the past decade it has increased 85
percent.
Emory is five miles from downtown Atlanta, positioned
on the Clifton Road corridor with such neighbors as the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention and the national headquarters of the
American Cancer Society.
With
11,000 students and 2,500 faculty from the United States and 90 foreign
countries, Emory has earned an international reputation for research
and teaching. Emory College and the Universitys professional schools
of medicine, business, law, public health, and theology consistently
earn high ratings. Emory Healthcare is the most comprehensive health
care delivery system in Georgia.
