Emory's annual commencement ceremony, pictured here from the window of Pitts Theology Library, is the highlight of the academic year. More than 15,000 graduates, family members, guests, faculty and staff converge on the quadrangle annually to attend the event, which is rich in academic traditions. Recent commencement speakers have included former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev, former Soviet Prime Minister Eduard Shevardnadze, noted African American scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr., former Secretary of Labor Elizabeth Dole and South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
