Waste Disposal at the Biotechnology Development Center at Emory West While the specific work that will be conducted at the Biotechnology Development Center at Emory West is still unknown, Emory will follow all federal and state regulations regarding the disposal of biological and chemical waste. For biological waste, Emory has a contract with BFI, Inc. to collect biological waste in labs. BFI then transports and disposes of the waste at an off-site location. For biological waste, such as petri dishes, the waste is collected in double-lined cardboard boxes and transported off-site by BFI to an approved disposal center. The waste is then decontaminated in autoclaves at temperatures of 225 degrees which kills all microbiological organisms; the waste is then disposed. Emory requires that all labs have a method of decontamination; small amounts of biological waste may be autoclaved in the lab and then disposed. For labs that generate chemical waste, Emory provides an approved contractor for disposal of the waste. The contractor transports the waste off-site, deactivates it and disposes of it by recycling or incineration. Small amounts of chemicals are used in research labs and the amount of waste produced depends upon the activities in that lab.
