African American artist Allan Rohan Crite of Boston, 89, has enjoyed a remarkably long and creative career as an artist and illustrator. His works are represented in major American museums, including the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston; the Museum of Modern Art in New York; and the Phillips Collection, the Corcoran Gallery and the Smithsonian Institution in Washington.
Crite's books, "Were You There When They Crucified My Lord" (1944) and "Three Spirituals" (1948), published by Harvard University Press, illustrate his fascination with Christianity as seen through contemporary eyes and experiences. In the 1960s, he began a series of works exploring the cultural/social roots of peoples of African, Asian and European descent. He also created a related series designed for young people on the cultural heritage of the United States. He still is expanding and probing the ideas underpinning these themes, although he also is interested in the current discussion of censorship, government support of the arts, and abortion rights.
