"The Night Inspector," the new novel from prolific fiction writer and essayist Frederick Busch, has been nominated for a National Book Critics Circle award, according to the group's announcement on Monday. Busch will be at Emory University on Wednesday, Feb. 9 to read from the novel and to hold a colloquium from 2-3 p.m. that afternoon in the same location. Both events are free and open to the public.

As the author of "A Dangerous Profession: A Book About the Writing Life," a collection of biographical and autobiographical essays on life as a writer, Busch is likely to provide valuable insight to aspiring creative writing students. He looks at the lives and careers of Hemingway, Kafka, Dickens and John O'Hara among others, and according to one critic, "the careers Busch sketches provide cautionary tales for the eager-beaver young creative-writing student."

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and educated at Muhlenberg College and Columbia University, Busch has published more than 20 books since 1971. His novels include "The Mutual Friend" about Charles Dickens, "Rounds," "Harry and Catherine," "Closing Arguments" and "Girls." He has received Woodrow Wilson, Ingram Merrill, National Endowment for the Arts, and Guggenheim fellowships. He was the recipient of the PEN/Malamud Award for Achievement in the Short Story and the Jewish Book Award for his novel "Invisible Mending." His collection, "The Children in the Woods," was a finalist for the PEN/Faulkner Award.

The American Academy of Arts and Letters also has honored him for his body of work. Busch is a Fairchild Professor of Literature at Colgate University, where he teaches literature and fiction writing.
