MUSIC AT EMORY 1999-00 SEASON FEATURES YO-YO MA/EMANUEL AX, KRONOS QUARTET, NIGEL KENNEDY AND MUCH MORE
The 1999-00 Music at Emory season offers diverse programming including popular favorites, cutting-edge artists and a full slate of performances from the Emory Chamber Music Ensemble. The new Candler Series at Glenn features the incomparable Yo-Yo Ma with Emanuel Ax, the Atlanta recital debut of soprano Barbara Bonney, pianist and conductor Philippe Entremont with the Vienna Chamber Orchestra, and the Atlanta debut of violinist Nigel Kennedy.
Subscriptions for the Candler Series at Glenn are on sale now; tickets to individual concerts go on sale Aug. 16. For more information, call the Arts at Emory box office at 404-727-5050, send e-mail to boxoffice@emory.edu, or go to www.emory.edu/ARTS.
Philippe Entremont has led the acclaimed Vienna Chamber Orchestra for more than 24 years. The concert program will feature works by Mozart and Tchaikovsky, including Mozart's Piano Concerto No.12 in A Major (K. 414). The duo of Yo-Yo Ma and Emanuel Ax has earned three Grammy awards, and both artists have performed with every major orchestra in the world. One critic exclaimed that one of their joint recitals was "one of the great musical occasions of a lifetime." British violinist Nigel Kennedy attracts as much attention for his punk-rock looks as for his performing, but his playing is exceptional and his musical interpretations are fresh, according to music critics. For his Atlanta debut, Kennedy will perform the Violin Concerto in A minor by J.S. Bach and the Violin Concerto in D Major by Beethoven. Barbara Bonney is widely regarded as a superlative recital artist whose reputation has been shaped by her radiant tone and personality, and her frequent "Leider" (song) recitals. She appears often at the Metropolitan Opera.
The Next Fest Series of cutting-edge performances will include Kronos Quartet, composer Philip Glass in a solo piano performance and the 1999 Hultgren Solo Cello Works Biennial composers competition. Next Fest also includes New Musik Café, an evening of sound sculptures from German composer Michael Obst with Thamyris and Moving in the Spirit Dancers. The Great Mangir, a shadow puppet music drama, rounds out Next Fest. The music drama is based on a play by Indonesian author and dissident Pramoedya Ananta Toer that is set in the palaces of the Mataram dynasty in 16th century Java. Composer Steven Everett and the Emory Gamelan Ensemble will be joined by puppeteer Midiyanto and dancer Dana Phelps-Marschalk.
The Emory Chamber Music Society of Atlanta, under the artistic direction of William Ransom, will present a full schedule of performances featuring guest artists such as pianist Harumi Hanafusa, classical guitarist Eliot Fisk, violinist Alan Gilbert and vocalist John Hornor. The ensemble's programming also will feature the complete works for cello and piano by Beethoven as well as his Septet.
The final collection of concerts in the season is made up of popular local favorites and community traditions. Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, which has been an Atlanta tradition since 1935, will be Dec. 3 and 4, Harmony: Atlanta's International Youth Chorus will perform two concerts; Atlanta Symphony Orchestra assistant concertmaster Jun-Ching Lin will give a solo violin performance; Timothy Albrecht and friends will present the annual Just for Kids! fundraiser for Egelston Children's Hospital; and Emory faculty members Timothy and Tamara Albrecht, and Keiko and William Ransom will join for a program of duets called Duo-Duo.
The Music at Emory season also is augmented by performances from dozens of faculty, student and community artists and ensembles, most of which are free for the public. The complete chronological listing of Music at Emory events is as follows:
