Humanities Scholarship Endowed By Emory Professor Emeritus Awarded To Oxford College Student

Brian Green, son of Mark and Cindy Green of Conyers, Ga. (30094), has been selected to receive the first Floyd Watkins Scholarship awarded to an Oxford College student for assistance in the sophomore year. The Watkins Scholarship, a $3,000 grant toward tuition, has been awarded for many years on the Atlanta campus, but was expanded this past year to fund a rising sophomore student on the Oxford campus. This need-based scholarship was established by Floyd and Anna Watkins of Atlanta (30307), to be awarded for outstanding performance in the humanities. Watkins is an English professor emeritus of the university.

Green was one of several strong freshmen nominated by Oxford College faculty and staff who possessed the qualities required for the award. He has contributed widely to the community through outstanding leadership in various drama organizations, as an English tutor both on campus and at a local middle school, and as an editor for several student publication. He was recently selected as one of 25 students who will serve as peer assistance leaders next year, mentoring freshmen through orientation and team-teaching a freshmen seminar with a faculty or staff member.

"During the short time he has been at Oxford, Brian has already begun to fulfill the promise suggested by his high school grades, test scores, and non-academic achievements," according to Gretchen Schulz, associate professor of English. "He is bright, warm, open-minded and open-hearted. I am pleased that we can reward him for all he is, for all he has accomplished so far, and encourage him to go onward and upward through the support of the Watkins Scholarship."

Oxford College of Emory University, located in Oxford, Ga., is a two-year, liberal arts division of Emory University.
