More Asian students choose Emory; international students, scholars on rise

A number of Asian countries are increasingly choosing Emory University, and Goizueta Business School in particular, to educate their government's financial and policy leaders.

Senior officials from the Japanese Ministry of Trade, the Bank of Korea, the Bank of Thailand and the Indonesian Ministry of Finance are earning their degrees at Goizueta, according to Nancy Roth Remington, director of international programs for the business school.

During the 1998-99 academic year, Emory hosted a total of 597 international students, as well as 676 foreign scholars (defined as university faculty and researchers). These numbers mark a 13.8% percent increase over the past 4 years. For the third consecutive year, visitors from China (206), Korea (91), India (82) and Germany (70) make up more than 33 percent of the international student and scholar population, and China has consistently sent the most student and scholar participants over the last five years, says Lelia Crawford, assistant dean and director of international scholar and student programs.

The largest percentage of international students enrolled in proportion to total enrollment is in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (37%), followed by the Goizueta Business School (26%). The majority of international scholars, however, are involved in the health sciences, with an overwhelming majority (94%) focusing on research in health-related fields.
