Goizueta Business School Inaugurates 'Global Business Bowl' Program

This year's MBA orientation inaugurated a new international program for students, the "Goizueta Global Business Bowl." MBA Program Director and Assistant Dean Patrick Noonan used The Economist and a variety of other sources to compile 100 questions on global issues ranging from economics and business to culture and language. Then, in five weekly "bowl" sessions, teams of first- and second-year students competed to gain points, with point values escalating every day. The winning teams, representing both classes, were feted to a VIP tour of CNN and dinner at an Italian restaurant.

Reflecting the global nature of business, the school has made "globalization" a major theme in its mission, taking dramatic steps in the last five years to expand its international programs. At least 60 percent of its faculty conduct research, consult or teach in the international arena; about one-third of its MBA students and 8-10 percent of its BBA students are from nearly 40 nations outside the United States. Every year, between 15 and 20 percent of the daytime MBA class spends time outside of the U.S. on study abroad at another university, participation in "study trips," international projects and internships; and executive MBA students are required to participate in a two-week study abroad trip during their final semester. Interest in study abroad is rapidly escalating among BBA students, who are studying in a wide variety of programs throughout the world. All BBA and MBA students are required to take courses in "Global Perspectives."

The business school has exchange partnerships with nearly 30 universities in Asia, Europe, Latin America and former Soviet countries and offers the largest number of exchange opportunities on a per student basis of any business school in the country. A trio of dual-degree international MBA programs (with Nijenrode University (The Netherlands), the University of Linz (Austria) and HEC (France), enable MBA students to earn two graduate management degrees in five semesters of study. The school is also a member of the Board of the MBA Corps, which places MBA graduates in year-long internships in a number of countries in Central/Eastern Europe.
