Robert W. Woodruff Health Sciences Center
Three British Medical Centers Formally Affiliate with Health Sciences Center
Medical students and postgraduate students involved in basic health sciences research will soon have the opportunity to participate in a transatlantic exchange program between the Robert W. Woodruff Health Sciences Center of Emory University and Guy's, King's College and St. Thomas' (GKT*) medical schools of London. A formal affiliation agreement signed in June 1999 by the schools allows for the establishment of such an exchange program which will expand to include nursing and public health students in the near future. Initially, six medical students from each institution are spending about three months abroad.
The schools' areas of mutual interest-which also lend themselves to transatlantic collaboration-include immunobiology, neurosciences, psychiatry and health services (including health policy, clinical outcomes, staff development and system governance). Areas of expertise common to both institutions include vaccine development and research and treatment for stroke and sickle cell anemia. The Psychiatric Institute (also known as Denmark Hill) located at King's College is recognized as having one of the world's leading psychiatric research programs, many components of which complement research in Emory's Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. Cancer genetics and immunobiology are also well-regarded areas of research expertise at GKT.
* London's 12 medical schools have been consolidated into four, with
GKT representing a merging of the city's southeast medical centers. The
new school's official name is Guy's, King's College & St. Thomas' Hospitals,
Medical & Dental School.
