Black History Month Activities At Emory University

Monday, Feb. 7
"Can Non-Violent Confrontation Work? A Perspective from the Trenches." Rajmohan Gandhi, the grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, and civil rights activist/former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Andrew Young, will discuss non-violent confrontation in the Indian independence and the U.S. civil rights movements. They will reflect on whether this philosophy can be applied to current conflicts, and respond to questions from the audience. 5 p.m. Glenn Memorial Auditorium, 1652 N. Decatur Rd., Emory. Wednesday, Feb. 9
"Has the Black Church Failed the Black Community?" Lecture by Rev. Bridgette Young, director and campus minister for the Wesley Foundation at Georgia Tech. 11 a.m. 311 Bishops Hall, 500 Kilgo Circle, Emory.
Thursday, Feb. 10
"Money, Power, Respect: Economic Development in the Black Community." Lecture by Dennis Kimbro, educator and author of "What Makes the Great Great" and "Think & Grow Rich: A Black Choice." Followed by reception and book signing. 7 p.m. Woodruff Health Sciences Center Administration Building auditorium, 1440 Clifton Rd., Emory.
Wednesday, Feb. 16
"Anna Julia Cooper-Black Educator." Lecture by Emilie Townes, Union Theological Seminary. 11 a.m. Cannon Chapel, 515 Kilgo Circle, Emory.
Saturday, Feb. 19
"Living With Pride: Ruth Ellis at 100." Filmmaker Yvonne Welbon will screen her most recent film, followed by a reception. 7:30 p.m. Harland Cinema, Dobbs University Center, 605 Asbury Circle, Emory.
Wednesday, Feb. 23
"Desegregation in Georgia: The Story of HOPE." Discussion by Randall Burkett and Laura Micham of Emory's special collections about materials archived at Emory, including items from Malcolm X. 4 p.m. Special Collections, Woodruff Library, 540 Asbury Circle, Emory.
Thursday, Feb. 24
"Hidden in Plain View: A Secret Story of Quilts and the Underground Railroad." Lecture by authors Jacqueline Tobin and Raymond Dobard. 7 p.m. 311 Bishops Hall, 500 Kilgo Circle, Emory.
Tuesday, Feb. 29
"Perspectives on the Photography of Gordon Parks." Panel discussion
with Wole Soyinka, Nobel laureate and Robert W. Woodruff Professor of the
Arts; Philip Brookman, curator of photography and media arts at the Corcoran
Museum of Art; and Rudolph P. Byrd, director of African American Studies
at Emory. Moderator: Anthony Hirschel, director of the Carlos Museum. 7
