Taylor Branch To Give Keynote Address For Emory's Martin Luther King Jr. Week Celebration Jan. 17-23
Pulitzer Prize-winning author Taylor
Branch will discuss "America During the King Years" on Tuesday,
Jan. 18 as the keynote address of Martin Luther King Jr. Week activities
at Emory University. Branch was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for his book
"Parting the Waters: America in the King Years, 1954-1963." He
also is the author of "Pillar of Fire: America in the King Years, 1963-65,"
published last year. His lecture will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 18 in Cox
Hall ballroom 4, 569 Asbury Circle, on the Emory campus.
Visitor parking is available in the Fishburne and Peavine parking decks. The Fishburne deck is located on Fishburne Dr., behind the Goizueta Business School off Clifton Rd. Monday, Jan. 17
Community Service Project. "Remembering Martin Luther King Through Service." Volunteers will plant trees in the historic Martin Luther King Jr. district in conjunction with Trees Atlanta. 9 a.m.1 p.m. To volunteer, call Volunteer Emory at 404-727-6268.
Tuesday, Jan. 18
Taylor Branch, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of "Parting the Waters: America in the King Years, 1954-1963," will give the keynote address titled "America During the King Years." 7 p.m. Cox Hall ballroom #4, 569 Asbury Circle, Emory.
Wednesday, Jan. 19
"Dr. King's Agenda for a New Millennium." Lecture by James Fowler, Charles Howard Candler Professor of Theology and director of Emory's ethics center. Noon. Jones Room, Woodruff Library, 540 Asbury Circle, Emory.
"Women Talking With Women: Women of Color and White Women in Dialogue." Forum facilitated by Pamela Epps, Emory Counseling Center. 4 p.m. Emory Women's Center Conference Room, 618 McTyeire (behind the Dobbs Center), Emory.
Voices of Inner Strength, Emory's student gospel choir, will commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. with a concert and cake celebration. 8 p.m. Coca-Cola Commons, Dobbs University Center, 605 Asbury Circle, Emory.

Interactive Exhibit: "Building on the King Legacy Through Business, Healthcare and Community Development: Approaches for Diversity in the Twenty-first Century." 1-4 p.m. The Student Commons, first floor, Goizueta Business School, 1300 Clifton Rd., Emory.
Thursday, Jan. 20
"Promoting Health and Economic Development Through Diversity: Approaches for the 21st Century." Community service awards recognizing those organizations that promote diversity in our society. Panel discussion with business, healthcare and community leaders. Moderator Earl Hill, Emory's Goizueta Business School. Musical selections by Shantella Carr and the Voices of Inner Strength. Non-denominational worship service. Alton B. Pollard III, director of
black church studies at Emory, will preach. Voices of Inner Strength will
