CANDLER SCHOOL OF THEOLOGY WELCOMES NEW FACULTY
By Dan Howell
Director of Communications, Candler School of Theology

Four faculty members and a program director have taken positions recently at Emory University's Candler School of Theology. Interim Dean Charles R. Foster said, "These persons bring a wide range of interests and perspectives to enrich the life and work of the school as it seeks to fulfill its mission of preparing leaders for ministry."

Appointments include:

Mary Elizabeth Moore, director of the Program for Women in Theology and Ministry, and professor of religion and education. Moore is a nationally known author and leader in religious education. She comes to Candler from Claremont School of Theology, where she co-founded the Multicultural Resource and Research Center, and she is an ordained deacon in the United Methodist Church.

Moore's work is grounded in practical theology with concern for "tikkun olam" (repair of the world). She is author of "Education for Continuity and Change" (1983), "Teaching from the Heart" (1991, 1998), and "Ministering with the Earth" (1998). She is co-author of "Called to Serve" (1987) and several educational resource books. Her current research focuses in feminist theology and spirituality, cultural diversity in youth ministry, reconciliation theory and practice, and sacramental teaching.

Moore has bachelor's and master's degrees from Southern Methodist University (1966, 1968), and an M.A. and Ph.D. from Claremont School of Theology (1977, 1981).

Michael Joseph Brown, assistant professor of New Testament, comes to Candler from teaching religion at Wabash College in Indiana. He is an elder in the African Methodist Episcopal Church. Brown's research interests include prayer in the ancient world, issues in Pauline theology, early Christian biblical interpretation, early North African Christianity, the Bible and modern culture, and methods and strategies for teaching the Bible. His current research focuses on early Christian interpretations of the Lord's Prayer.

Brown has a bachelor's degree from Vanderbilt University (1990), and an M.Div. and a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago (1994, 1998).

Jong Chun Park, visiting professor of systematic theology, is part of the ongoing, happy connection of Candler and Korean Methodism. He is a Candler alumnus and now professor of systematic theology at Methodist Theological Seminary in Seoul.

Park is author of "Interliving Theology" (in Korean, 1991), "The Crawling God" (in Korean, 1995), and "Crawl with God, Dance in the Spirit!: A Creative Formation of Korean Theology of the Spirit" (in Korean and English, 1998). His research interests include trinity and spirituality, Asian theology, theology of Wesley, and ecumenics.

Park has B.Th. from Methodist Theological Seminary in Seoul (1977), and an M.Div. and a Ph.D. from Emory University (both in 1986).

Timothy J. Sandoval, visiting assistant instructor in Old Testament, is completing his Ph.D. in the Graduate Division of Religion at Emory University. The topic is wealth and poverty in Jewish wisdom literature, including Proverbs. His research interests center on the study of biblical and early Jewish wisdom literature and biblical ethics.

Sandoval has a B.A. from the University of California-Davis (1990) and an M.Div. from Princeton Theological Seminary (1993).

Mark Monk Winstanley, interim director of the Youth Theological Initiative. Winstanley has a decade of experience as a religious educator at the high school level, and he has taught in YTI's summertime institute for five years. He also has leadership experience in curriculum design, music, youth ministry, and campus ministry.

YTI, a part of Candler's Program in Christian Education, brings 60 rising high school seniors to Candler for four weeks each summer in a unique exploration of theology and public issues. YTI funding is provided by the Lilly Endowment.

Winstanley has a bachelor's degree from St. Helens College of Technology (U.K.) (1983), a B.A. from the University of Durham (U.K.) (1989), and an M.S. from Georgia State University (1997).
