TUTU, OTHER FACULTY TO HIGHLIGHT CANDLER'S NEW HOMECOMING EVENT
A luncheon talk by Archbishop Desmond M. Tutu and the celebration of a perennially popular course will be the keynote events April 8-9 as Emory University's Candler School of Theology celebrates Homecoming '99. A new event for alumni and friends of the school, the program will combine the good food and fellowship of a local church homecoming with worship, learning and recreation to refresh pastors after their Easter activities.
Tutu, a Nobel Peace Prize winner and the Robert W. Woodruff Visiting Professor of Theology at Candler, will speak at a barbecue luncheon Friday. Dean R. Kevin LaGree will present the distinguished graduate awards and Candler medals.
Prior to the luncheon, professors Roberta Bondi and William Mallard will present "CT 301 Revisited," a spirited celebration of 20 years of team-teaching their course, "Introduction to the History of Christian Thought."
Homecoming '99 events begin Thursday morning with a golf outing, chapel service and the first session of Continuing Education workshops. Homecoming officially starts with a 6 p.m. jazz vespers service led by Emory music professor Dwight Andrews, a pastor and well-known composer. That evening the classes of 1959, 1969, 1979 and 1989 will gather for reunions.
Friday morning includes a breakfast for pre-1949 graduates and a hymn sing. Friday afternoon includes tours and open houses.
Homecoming '99 will close Friday evening with the Candler Choraliers' spring concert, "Songs of Faith and Freedom," including premiere and commissioned works. The concert, which will be repeated April 10, begins at 8:15 p.m.
