EMORY'S CANDLER SCHOOL OF THEOLOGY ANNOUNCES SHORT-TERM COURSES FOR LAITY
Six short-term courses promoting a deeper understanding of faith issues are being offered in 1999-2000 by Emory University's Candler School of Theology. The courses, held on evenings or weekends, are conducted through the school's Lay Theology Institute (LTI).
LTI courses provide stimulus for personal growth regardless of religious or academic background, exploring Christian themes in an ecumenical context. Four of the courses meet once a week for six weeks. The two weekend courses meet Friday evening and Saturday daytime. The courses, instructors, dates and sites are:
o Spirit, Life, Freedom: A Walk Through the Theology of Jürgan Moltmann, by Manfred Hoffman, professor emeritus of church history and historical theology, Candler School of Theology, 7-9 p.m. Tuedays, Sept. 21-Oct. 26, Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, 731 Peachtree St., NE, Atlanta.
o The Life and Message of Paul, by Arthur Wainwright, professor emeritus of New Testament, Candler School of Theology, 7:30-9:30 p.m. Mondays, Oct. 18-Nov. 22, Oak Grove United Methodist Church, 1722 Oak Grove Rd., Decatur.
o United Methodism 2000, by Thomas Frank, director of Methodist studies and associate professor of church administration and congregational life, Candler School of Theology, 7-10 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 4-5, Kingswood United Methodist Church, 5015 Tilly Mill Rd., Dunwoody.
o Black Theology, by Noel Erskine, associate professor of theology and ethics, Candler School of Theology, 7:30-9:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Feb. 1-March 7, 2000, Cascade United Methodist Church, 3144 Cascade Rd., SW, Atlanta.
o Do What You Have the Power to Do: Nurturing Spirituality in the Congregation Through Biblical Witness, by Helen Bruch Pearson, former administrator, Candler School of Theology, 7:30-9:30 p.m. Tuesdays, March 7-April 11, 2000, Smoke Rise Baptist Church, 5901 Hugh Howell Rd., Stone Mountain.
o Marriage and Family in an Uncertain World, by Richard Bondi, pastoral psychotherapist and former Candler faculty member, 7-10 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, April 28-29, 2000, North Decatur United Methodist Church, 1523 Church St., Decatur.
Cost is $45 per course with registration at least a week in advance ($50 at the door, space permitting); members of partner congregations and members of the Emory community pay only $35 ($40 at the door). Each course carries the option of one continuing education unit.
