NOTED UNITED METHODIST EDUCATOR TO LEAD CANDLER SCHOOL OF THEOLOGY WOMEN'S PROGRAM
Nationally known Christian educator Mary Elizabeth Moore will join the faculty of Emory University's Candler School of Theology in the fall of 1999 as director of the school's Program for Women in Theology and Ministry.
Moore, an author, professor and United Methodist church leader, also will be professor of religion and education at Candler. Currently professor of theology and Christian education at Claremont School of Theology in Southern California, she has taught in theological higher education since 1977 and is an ordained deacon in the United Methodist Church.
Among Moore's several books are Teaching from the Heart: Theology and Educational Method (republished in 1998) and Ministering with the Earth (1998). She is president of two national organizations, the Association of Professors and Researchers in Religious Education and the Association of Practical Theology, and co-founder of the Multicultural Resource and Research Center at Claremont.
"Mary Elizabeth Moore is a national leader in the United Methodist Church and a pioneering and creative religious educator who is known and respected around the world," says Dean R. Kevin LaGree of Candler. "She will provide exceptional leadership for the Women in Theology and Ministry Program because she combines ministerial experience, scholarly excellence and a passion for the church."
In the church, Moore is on the Board of Ordained Ministry of the California-Pacific Annual Conference. She frequently serves as a retreat leader, preacher and consultant on education, spirituality and youth ministry.
Moore is vice president of the International Academy of Practical Theology and a board member of the Oxford Institute in Methodist Theological Studies. She is a past president of the Religious Education Association and the United Methodist Association of Scholars in Christian Education.
A native of Baton Rouge, La., she holds bachelor's and master's degrees from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, and master's and doctorate degrees from Claremont.
Candler, part of Emory University in Atlanta, is one of 13 theological
schools of the United Methodist Church. The women's program is one of three
academic certificate programs at the school, and also sponsors peer mentoring,
speakers and other events.
