Candler School Of Theology Announces 42 New Recipients In Expanded Sherman Scholarship Program
Expansion of the Sherman Scholarships at Emory University's Candler School of Theology has helped place 42 new recipients for 1998-99 in the Sherman program, which combines funds to cover full tuition.
The Sherman Scholarship Fund supports more than 100 master of divinity students at Candler, making it one of the school's major means of assistance. Sherman Scholars are United Methodist students preparing for biblically based, evangelical ministry to local congregations.
The Sherman fund, begun in 1984 by the late Mr. and Mrs. Frank W. Sherman of Jacksonville, Fla., now provides 60 percent of tuition. Candler provides 30 percent. Under the program, these funds are combined with support from the students' United Methodist annual conferences, and their home districts or churches. Normally, the total exceeds tuition substantially and thus helps with other expenses.
This partnership fulfills a key role in the school's aid efforts, says Candler Dean R. Kevin LaGree. "The Shermans' generosity will continue to be a great boost in our priority of reducing or eliminating student debt. Newly graduated pastors who do not have to face large repayments on education loans can be more creative and effective in ministry."
The scholarships are renewable for all three years of the master of divinity degree program, the usual seminary course leading to pastoral ministry.
Candler is one of 13 United Methodist seminaries in the United States. The new Sherman Scholars represent 16 annual conferences of the denomination.
