Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor to Speak at Emory

Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor will deliver the 1999-2000 Rosalynn Carter Distinguished Lecture in Public Policy at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2000 in Glenn Memorial Auditorium. The annual event is part of the Rosalynn Carter Programs in Public Policy at Emory's Institute for Women's Studies. The lecture is free and open to the public. Details on O'Connor's address will be provided as they become available.

O'Connor is a fitting speaker for the annual lecture by women who have played significant roles in shaping public policy. Prior to her appointment to the U.S. Supreme Court by then-President Ronald Reagan in 1981, O'Connor served on the Arizona Court of Appeals from and was judge of the Maricopa County Superior Court in Phoenix, Ariz. She was appointed as an Arizona state senator in 1969 and was subsequently elected to two two-year terms.

Past lecturers in this series are U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno, Secretary of State Madeleine K. Albright, civil rights activist and former NAACP head Myrlie Evers-Williams, former Surgeon General Joycelyn Elders, and Sarah Weddingon, who successfully argued the landmark Roe v. Wade case before the U.S. Supreme Court.

Former first lady Rosalynn Carter has been a Distinguished Fellow of the Emory Institute for Women's Studies since 1989, and has worked to establish the Rosalynn Carter Programs in Public Policy. The annual Distinguished Lecture Series in Public Policy is the centerpiece of these programs.
