EARLY DECISION, FOREIGN ENROLLMENT UP FOR EMORY'S INCOMING CLASS

Emory University will enroll approximately 1,200 students next week from every part of the United States and 20 foreign nations. Nearly 40 percent of the incoming class applied through early decision, meaning that Emory was the students' top choice and that they withdrew applications to other institutions when accepted by Emory. The number of early decision applicants increased 40 percent over the previous year. In addition, applications from foreign students rose 20 percent this year. The profile of the incoming class is:

1,197 students*
654 female
543 male
14.2% Asian American
9.0% African American
3.2% Foreign
2.9% Hispanic

The geographic breakdown of students is:
40.2% are from the South
23.5% are from the Middle Atlantic
10.5% are from the Midwest
7.8% are from the West
7.7% are from New England
7.0% are from the Southwest

* An official total of freshmen will not be available until after registration is completed Aug. 27.
