Emory Senior Michelle A. "Mandy" Schmitt Named Udall Scholar Emory senior Michelle A. "Mandy" Schmitt, daughter of Jerry and Elaine Schmitt of Macon, Ga. (31210) has been awarded a Morris K. Udall Scholarship for the 2000-2001 academic year. Schmitt, an alumni of Emory at Oxford who is currently pursuing a double major in biology and environmental studies at Emory College, will receive a one-year scholarship to cover the cost of tuition, fees, books, room and board, up to a maximum of $5,000. Of the 80 recipients, Schmitt was the only student from Georgia to be chosen. The award is given to American juniors and seniors who are pursuing degrees in fields related to the environment, and to American Indians and Alaska natives who are pursuing degrees in fields related to health care or tribal policy. Schmitt plans to attend graduate school in the fall of 2001, and simultaneously study public health and law. Upon learning of the award, Schmitt said "I was speechless, shaking, humbled, and I began to cry. It meant so much to me. This award gives me confidence that I can pursue my chosen career path, and that my efforts are making a positive impact on environmental issues." Udall Scholarships are awarded in the spring for use during the next academic year. To be considered, a student must be nominated by his or her college or university. The Morris K. Udall Foundation was established by the U.S. Congress in 1992 to honor Morris King Udall's 30 years of service in the U.S. House of Representatives. The Udall Foundation is committed to educating a new generation of Americans to preserve and protect their national heritage through studies in the environment, American Indian health and tribal policy, and effective public policy conflict resolution. The foundation's activities are supported by the interest accrued in a federal trust fund and by contributions from the private sector. The Udall Foundation is an executive branch agency. The President of the United States appoints its board of trustees with the advice and consent of the U.S. Senate.
