top honors in the National Debate Tournament held March 23-27 in Kansas
City, Mo. A perennial powerhouse, Emory was one of the few schools to
qualify three teams for the tournament, and would have had the second,
third and fourth seeds if the rules did not limit schools to only two
teams in the top 16. As a result, the fourth-seed team of Jon Paul Lupo
and Mike Horowitz received a second-round seed -- basically a wild card
-- and became the only second-round team to win in the tournament's 54-year
history. Plus they faced Emory teammates Kamal Ghali and Stephan Bailey
in the semifinals. Emory has had a team in the finals four of the last
five years and won it all twice. What's particularly impressive, is that
they were all different teams, demonstrating the Barkley Forum's depth.
