This national organization is recognized by the U.S Department of Education as the professional accreditating body for schools, departments and colleges of teacher education. Emory's program met all 20 NCATE standards for accreditation without any weaknesses being cited. Emory becomes one of 21 institutions in Georgia to have NCATE approval and one of 500 nationally. NCATE-accredited schools must meet rigorous standards set by the education profession and members of the public, Among these standards required of accredited schools of education are: to ensure the knowledge of subject matter content, and how to teach it, is a priority; to emphasize school district collaboration; to ensure that teachers can use technology in instruction; and to prepare teacher candidates to teach students from diverse backgrounds. Emory's initial and advanced teacher education programs are also approved by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission, the state agency authorized to accredit teacher preparation programs in Georgia.
