Emory University Names 2001 Woodruff and Callaway
Scholars
Eighteen Woodruff Scholars and one Callaway Scholar have been named
by Emory University among the 2001-02 incoming class. The merit scholarships
are for full tuition, fees, room and board to attend Emory for four
years beginning this fall, an approximate four-year value of $143,500.
In addition, the Woodruff Scholars are granted a one-time $1,000 stipend
for a summer research project abroad. The awards are given to students
who have demonstrated intellectual vigor, outstanding academic achievement,
unselfish character, leadership and communication skills.
The Robert W. Woodruff Scholars Program is named in honor of the late
chairman of the Coca-Cola Company. The Robert W. Woodruff Scholarships
were established in 1980 with proceeds from a $105 million gift the
previous year from the Emily and Ernest Woodruff Fund. This endowment,
given by the universitys longtime benefactors Robert W. Woodruff
and his brother, George W. Woodruff, was then the largest single gift
given to an educational institution in the nations history.
The Ely R. Callaway Jr. Scholarship, first awarded in 1995, is named
in honor of the distinguished Emory alumnus. After graduating with a
degree in history from Emory College in 1940, Callaway had successful
careers in the textile industry, the winery business, and most recently
as the founder of Callaway Golf, the nations largest golf club
manufacturer. He is credited with revolutionizing the golf industry
with the first oversized driver, the Big Bertha. Callaway passed away
July 6 at age 82.
