JAZZ STAR MICHAEL BRECKER TO HEADLINE EMORY JAZZ FESTIVAL WHO: Michael Brecker, Gary Motley Trio, Vecinos del Mundo with Jerry Fields, Emory University Jazz Ensemble, Georgia State University Jazz Ensemble, Army Ground Forces Jazz Guardians WHAT: Emory Jazz Festival, Stutz Wimmer, director WHEN: 8:15 p.m. Feb. 1-3 WHERE: Performing Arts Studio, 1804 N. Decatur Rd., Emory. 404-727-5050 Renowned tenor saxophonist Michael Brecker will perform with the Atlanta All-Stars Jazz Band and will offer a free jazz clinic as part of the annual Emory Jazz Festival. Festival director Stutz Wimmer has lined up an exciting variety of artists from the Emory and Georgia State jazz ensembles and the Army Ground Forces Jazz Guardians to some of the city's best jazz artists to join Brecker as the Atlanta All-Stars Jazz Band. The popular Gary Motley Trio and the Latin flavor of Vecinos del Mundo are highlights as well. Brecker has recorded and performed with the most respected and renowned names in jazz including Chet Baker, George Benson, Dave Brubeck, Don Cherry, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Freddie Hubbard, Quincy Jones, Pat Metheny, Charles Mingus and Jaco Pastorius. He also has worked with pop stars John Lennon, Frank Sinatra, Bruce Springsteen, Frank Zappa, Steely Dan and Joni Mitchell among others. Brecker recorded his self-titled solo debut in 1987 with Pat Metheny, Jack DeJohnette and Charlie Haden, and it was voted Jazz Album of the Year by Downbeat and Jazziz magazines. His second solo release, "Don't Try This At Home," won Brecker the first of his seven Grammy Awards. He is nominated for two more Grammy Awards this year for his most recent album, "Time is of the Essence."
