Profile
Emory College student Kate Bissell covered a protest atop Table Mountain near Cape Town the day after she arrived in South Africa in May 1998. She was one of twelve journalism students participating in month-long reporting internships with Cape Town newspapers. Bissell, a political science and journalism co-major from Nashville, Tennessee, encountered a boy in Kruger National Park who was a refugee from Mozambique. In an article she asked, "Why was I born in the United States to middle-class, college-educated parents while he was born into conditions so bad that facing death in a game park is worth the chance to escape?"
