REMOTE ACCESS - All Library resources are available remotely. When off campus and (not using Emory Online software), you will be prompted for an Emory ID. If you do not know your Emory ID, click here.  (You will be linked to a webpage where you will enter your social  security number and last name. Submit that information and then your 7 digit Emory ID number will appear.)

Databases

EUCLID   Emory's online catalog for  finding  books, journals and media at all Emory Libraries. The Health Sciences Center Library is listed as HEALTH in EUCLID. There is also a link to the Information Gateway, which lists all databases available to the Emory community.

OVID Search software that connects you to bibliographic and full text databases.  CINAHL (Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health),  and Medline (clinical medicine) are the main databases for nursing. Duke University has an excellent online Ovid tutorial.

Online Journal Of Knowledge Synthesis For Nursing An online journal from the Virginia Henderson International Nursing Library which provides full text, critical reviews of research pertinent to clinical practice problems  (Access is for one simultaneous user.)

MDConsult - A site designed for physicians - it contains practice guidelines, 'what your patients are reading', drug information, reference books, journal searching and much more. Definitely worth a look. NOTE: For remote access, you must first register to use it from an Emory campus computer.

Harrison's Online Searchable full text of Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine.

Hurst's the Heart Online-Searchable full text of Hurst's The Heart.

GALILEO From the  University System of Georgia a World Wide Web-based database server, GALILEO offers access for participating institutions to over 100 databases indexing thousands of periodicals and scholarly journals. Over 2000 journal titles are provided in full text. Other resources include an encyclopedia, business directories, government publications and Georgia Library Catalogs.

Health Source:Nursing/Academic Edition Provides access to scholarly publications in nursing, medicine and allied health and links to many full text journals.

Health Source Plus A database of health information for the consumer containing full text of some journals, a medical dictionary, drug information and health education pamphlets.

Lexis-Nexis Academic Universe - Variety of databases covering information on news, business, and government issues. Also has a searchable section on statistics.

ISI Web of Knowledge - This is a portal for 3 databases, Web of Science, Current Contents Connect and Journal Citation Reports which all cover the subject areas of science and the social sciences.

  • Web of Science-The unique feature of this database is cited referenced searching. You can look for a particular author and article and it will display how many times that article has been cited and by whom.

  • Current Contents Connect-A current awareness database providing bibliographic information to over 8000 journals and 2000 books (will contain the most recent articles that have not yet been indexed in bibliographic databases like Medline.)

  • Journal Citation Reports- A quantifiable statistical database that gives journals a ranking (impact factors) in their subject areas.

MedWeb - A catalog of health internet sites developed at the Emory Health Sciences Center Library.

Merck Manual - Searchable full text of the Merck Manual of Diagnosis and Therapy.

Search Engine Advice This site give hints on which search engines do what, with links to the engines themselves.   Different search engines index different web pages so you may have to try more than one.  Meta search engines (which search many search engines at once) are good to use if you can't find  anything on your topic. Use them judiciously though, since you will get lots of hits.

Full Text Journals

Health Sciences Center Library - Electronic Journals - This site includes electronic journals available through the Health Sciences Center Library, for use by Emory faculty, staff and students. It includes full text journals that the library has a paid subscription either directly through the publisher or through the Ovid database full text collection.

ScienceDirect from the Elsevier Science Publisher, provides electronic full text to recent issues of major journals in science  and medicine, as well as social science and humanities titles.

Internet Journal of Advanced Nursing Practice A peer reviewed full text electronic journal indexed in CINAHL.   The publisher Internet Scientific Publications publishes many other full text Internet journals that are peer reviewed and online.

American Association Of Colleges Of Nursing (AACN) AACN's educational, research, governmental advocacy, data collection, publications, and other programs work to establish quality standards for bachelor's- and graduate-degree nursing education.

American Academy of Nurse-Midwives Educational and professional information, list of nurse midwives, and press releases.

American Academy of Nurse Practitioners This organization has information on conferences and continuing education, practice, legislation, regulations and some electronic publications on its web site.

ANA (American Nurses Association) This professional organization offers services to nurses in such areas as continuing education, professional standard, conferences, governmental relations, economic and general welfare, and research, and provides services to its constituent nurses' associations in each State, the District of Columbia, Guam, and the Virgin Islands. ANA publications serve those in the profession as a forum for research and a voice among peers.

Georgia Association of Nursing Students  (GANS)Contains local information on the Georgia Legislature, GANS community activities and other nursing links.

National League For Nursing Leading accrediting body for all types of nursing education programs within the US and its territories.

Nurse Practitioner Central Conceived by Nurse Practitioner Support Services, this web site provides information for and about the nurse practitioner, with an emphasis of providing clinical information readily accessible to the nurse practitioner.

National Student Nurses' Association (NSNA) A preprofessional nursing organization that offers many benefits and leadership opportunities.

US Boards of Nursing Lists the Boards of Nursing in the different states and links to those State Boards of Nursing with websites.

International Nursing

International Network for Doctoral Education in Nursing A worldwide group of nurse educators focusing on improving health of all people through research and an doctoral education began in 1995. This site contains information on international scholarly journals by country, directories of international doctoral programs and nontraditional/summer doctoral programs and conference papers.

NMAP (Nursing, Midwifery and Allied health Professions A gateway to information on nursing, midwifery and allied health in the United Kingdom.

Transcultural and Multicultural Health Links Provides health profiles on ethnic, religious, and special populations.

Guidelines To Practice Sponsored by Queensland Health (Australia) this electronic publication provides information on caring for patients from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.

Multicultural Health Links Queensland Health (Australia) links to many different ethnic health sites not only in Australia, but the US and Canada dealing with culture and religion . There are links to translated health materials in many different languages.

Nursing Mailing Lists A very comprehensive discussion list for nurses to which they can subscribe. 

NursingNet This site provides information for nursing resources for all nurses including specialties, chatrooms, and a special mentoring program for nursing students via email.

The Nursing Theory Page This site is a collaborative effort by an international group who are interested in developing a collection of resources about nursing theories throughout the world.

Research

The Agency for Health Care Policy And Research (ACER) The Agency for Health Care Policy and Research (AHCPR), part of the US Department of Health and Human Services is the lead agency charged with supporting research designed to improve the quality of healthcare, reduce its cost, and broaden access to essential services. AHCPR's broad programs of research bring practical, science based information to medical practitioners and to consumers and other health care science purchasers.

Health Services Technology Assessment (HSTAT) HSTAT is a free, electronic resource that provides access to the full text of documents useful in healthcare decision making. HSTAT includes: clinical practice guidelines, quick reference guides for clinicians, consumer brochures, and evidence based reports sponsored by the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research (AHCPR).

National Guideline Clearinghouse (NCG) - A comprehensive database of evidenced-based clinical practice guidelines and related abstracts, summaries, and comparison materials for health care professionals. NCG is sponsored by the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research in partnership with the American Medical Association and the American Association of Health Plans.

National Institute Of Health (NIH) The NIH is one of eight health agencies which is part of the US Department of Health and Human Services. The National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR) conducts clinical and basic research for the care of patients during illness and the prevention of diseases. It awards many research contracts to universities and other research organizations.

The Joanna Briggs Institute For Evidence Based Nursing & Midwifery Provides evidence-based research and systematic reviews on which nurses and other health professionals can base their practice

Virginia Henderson International Nursing Library The Virginia Henderson International Nursing Library provides innovative data, information, and knowledge about nursing research through two subscription services: The Registry of Nursing Research and The Online Journal of Knowledge Synthesis for Nursing.
