PPP is now EmoryConnect ========================= EmoryConnect Starting May 1st ITD will be distributing a new dial-in package called EmoryConnect. EmoryConnect uses the Point to Point Protocol(PPP) as it's communications protocol. PPP has become the primary recommended and supported communications software for dial-in access at Emory. Through EmoryConnect you can create the same basic computing environment at home that you use in the office. EmoryConnect will work for anyone with a Dooley or Eagle account. We are synchronizing passwords between Dooley/Eagle and PPP. If you change your password on your Dooley/Eagle account, your PPP password is also updated. The services of EmoryConnect will be provided through a new dial-in rotary(727-4000). This rotary has been set up using new terminal servers with new capabilities. The new rotary is set up to do auto-recognition of PPP and the EmoryConnect packages have been pre-configured for the 7-4000 rotary. Additional enhancements are support for IPX and AT through PPP connections. EmoryConnect significantly improves, but does not solve all of the connectivity problems or eliminate all of the barriers. The new installation procedures will require a minimum of information, basically the phone number to dial, your individual ID, and your password. Dial-in communications is also limited by the speed of your modem and the overall capabilities of the computer you are using. The applications that you can use with EmoryConnect may require faster computers with more memory and more disk space. Fortunately the cost of computers, computer memory and disk drives continue to go down, almost on a daily basis. Recommended hardware minimums: a mid-range Intel 486 processor (Pentium will help) with 8 Meg of Ram(16 or more is better), and for Macintosh users most new software expects at least a 68040 processor, but a PowerMac is best, with 8 Meg minimum. ============================== Please go to the "econnect" directory to download the software.
