Exploring art and artistry is not limited to performance or creating. It also includes examining the contribution of art and its creators to humanity and to the understanding of important societal issues. Art can move and inspire as well as create the impetus to look at the familiar in new ways and shed light on an artist’s views of the world around him or her. Emory students examine art and artists in the following ways:
The Impact of Commercialization on Carnatic Music in India
Investigations of a Choreographic Voice: A Personal Approach to Dance-making
Metaphor, Structure, and Contemporary Theatre in a Changing Global Community
Misty Curtains: Steampunk and its Application to Theatrical Scenic Design
Turkish Theatre: Tradition and Innovation

“My research is titled ‘Music, Nationalism and Regional Identities in Indonesia.’ Two different genres, one classical and one popular, developed out of two very different historical and social traditions, but have simultaneously developed as uniquely Sundanese music. My objective is to examine the processes in these musical traditions to understand the role of music in affirming individual, societal and national identities.
“I conducted fieldwork in Bandung, West Java. Studying and living in this environment gave me the opportunity to observe techniques and attend rehearsals.”
