Atlanta is a city punctuated by green spaces and neighborhoods with personalities all their own. Our mass transit system, MARTA, keeps the city’s citizens connected with buses and sleek, clean above-ground trains.
Buckhead
Buckhead is the part of town that many people who’ve never visited our city know by name. It’s where the governor lives, and the location of some of the city’s most high-end real estate, shopping, nightlife and dining. Visit the Buckhead website.
Buford Highway Corridor
Whether you’re an international student looking for a taste of home or an Atlantan looking for great Korean barbecue, many locals make their way to the Buford Highway Corridor, a multi-ethnic stretch of shops and eating establishments on which you can find great tacquerias, authentic Vietnamese spring rolls and Korean groceries. Visit the Buford Highway Corridor website.
Castleberry Hill
Like other historic warehouse districts in the U.S. (New York’s Meatpacking District, Dallas’s West End, Cleveland’s Warehouse District), Castleberry Hill boasts a strong historic identity and architecture and is on the National Register of Historic Places. While maintaining its character, this west side neighborhood has been transformed into a hot spot for art, dining and shopping. Visit the Castleberry Hill website.
Decatur
For restaurants, pubs, shops and galleries, head to Decatur, where you’ll find world-class entertainment and dining options and plenty of shopping opportunities in a quaint community with a small-town vibe. Visit the Decatur website.
Little Five Points
Feeling grungy? Or bohemian? Or punkish? Or ska? Or want to check out trendy shops and vintage clothing stores? Or maybe buy a pair of Chucks or Keens? Little Five Points is Atlanta’s most alternative alternative, and there you’ll find all of the above plus a health food store and a tattoo parlor, right next to each other. Visit the Little Five Points website.
Midtown
Midtown is the arts center of Atlanta and boasts the High Museum of Art, the Woodruff Arts Center, the Fourteenth Street Playhouse, the Margaret Mitchell House and Turner Broadcasting. It’s home to several popular clubs and music venues and numerous great restaurants. Though Midtown is known for being popular among Atlanta's gay and lesbian citizens, it’s a favorite neighborhood for Atlantan's from all walks of life. Visit the Midtown website.
Sweet Auburn
One of Atlanta’s most historically rich and significant neighborhoods, the Sweet Auburn district is alive with memories of the civil rights movement and the spirit of the modern African American experience. The birthplace of MLK, the Ebenezer Baptist Church, the headquarters of the Rainbow Push Coalition, The Soul Food Museum and the Sweet Auburn Curb Market, a colorful produce and meat emporium, can all be found here. Visit the Sweet Auburn website.
Virginia Highland
Brick bungalows, great bars and restaurants, clothing and gift boutiques, and lots of people all meet near the corner of Virginia and Highland avenues, just minutes from campus. Visit the Virginia Highland website.

“My favorite place in Atlanta is downtown Decatur. On Wednesdays the Chocolate Bar has Ladies Night, which is great for a night out with the girls. If you want a place to sit for hours with your friends, The Brick Store is a great hangout. And if you want games, Twains is the place with shuffle board, pool, darts and much more! If none of those places float your boat, Virginia-Highland is another great area. Over 100 restaurants and bars within a three-mile area!
“You could pick any area of town and do tons of different things, depending on your mood. Buckhead has Lenox Mall, where you can buy almost anything, but if you are looking for boutiques check out Decatur and Virginia-Highland. If you want a great place to eat there are too many to choose! Atlanta has a ton of niche neighborhoods with a lot to offer; it is fun to explore and find new places to go.”
