Professional Sports

Atlantans love their sports and, depending on the season, you can find them in the stands cheering on their favorite home professional teams. Why not join them, either to root for Atlanta or your hometown team? The Atlanta Falcons offer big stadium football. The Atlanta Hawks swoosh the hoops at Philips Arena. The Atlanta Thrashers thrash about with the puck on the ice and, of course, the Braves hit it home at Turner Field. In addition to professional sporting events, Atlanta hosts the Chik-fil-A Bowl every year, while the SEC Championship football always gets kicked around at the Georgia Dome. In addition, we’ve hosted the Final Four, the Major League Baseball all star game, and the NBA all star game in recent years.

“I am a huge Columbus Blue Jackets fan (NHL). I buy my tickets far in advance to be sure that I get to see them when they come to Atlanta—and I always go in full Blue Jackets attire. Braves baseball games are also one of my frequent visits. Tailgating beforehand is one of the best ways to get off campus and enjoy a sports atmosphere.

“I grew up in a city with a huge college football following (Ohio State) so transitioning to Emory was a bit strange. The greatest difference between Emory and Columbus is the variety of teams that are followed. At Emory you go watch NFL football on Sundays in the DUC and you will see four or five different teams jerseys represented. At a major sports school, pretty much everyone backs not only the same college team (obviously) but the same professional teams as well.”
