Emory Scholars & Goizueta Scholars: Frequently Asked Questions

Thank you for your interest in the Emory Scholars and Goizueta Scholars programs.  If you have additional questions beyond those answered below, please contact the Office of Admission at admiss@emory.edu or 800.727.6036.

Submitting Nomination Materials

Q.  Beyond the Common Application and Emory Supplement, what additional materials are required for Emory Scholars or Goizueta Scholars?

A.  2 items: Nomination Form and Scholars Essay.  You should see your high school college/guidance counselor to obtain the nomination form and for additional questions.

Q.  Can I use the same essay for my scholar application that I used for my application essay?

A.  No - the scholars essay should be different from the admission essay.

Q.  Can materials be submitted electronically?

A.  Your Common Application and Emory Supplement can be submitted online.  If your school utilizes Naviance or E-Docs, counselor letters of recommendation, transcripts, or similar materials may also be submitted online.  It is also possible to upload the Scholars materials and email them to admission.processing@emory.edu.  Otherwise, the Scholars Nomination Form and Scholars Essay may submitted via snail mail.

Q.  Do all the materials have to be mailed together?

A.  We do not need duplicate copies of test scores, counselor letters of recommendation, transcripts, or similar materials, since those will be sent with your application for admission.  Preferably, the Nomination Form and Scholars Essay would be scanned and emailed to admission.processing@emory.edu.  We will match these Scholars materials with the rest of your application upon receipt.

Q.  Where should Scholars materials be mailed?

Deadlines

Q.  Does my application commit me to Emory via Early Decision?

A.  Students may apply to Emory via Regular Decision and still be considered for Emory Scholars.  Students specify their application plan (either Early Decision or Regular Deicsion) on the Emory Supplement.  Students will not receive notification about their Scholars status until mid-January, after the Early Decision 1 deposit deadline.

Q.  Is the deadline a postmark or received deadline?

A.  The Emory Scholars deadline is a POSTMARK deadline.  Items must be postmarked or emailed by November 15th.

Q.  When do my scores have to be submitted if I am taking SAT/ACT in October or November?

A.  Please mark on the Common Application any future test dates.  We will not finalize our list of Scholars semi-finalists until mid-January, so we may hold your decision until updated test scores are received.

Q.  When will I know that my application is complete?

A.  You may check your OPUS Account (www.opus.emory.edu) to see updates on application materials.  Please note that due to the high volume of materials, it may take up to 14 business days after receiving mailed materials for them to post on OPUS.

Recommendation Letters

Q.  Do I need a recommendation specific to the scholarship?

A.  While we’d prefer a letter specifically referencing the scholarship, we can use one of your general supplemental letters for scholarship nomination purposes.

Q.  Do I need another teacher letter of recommendation if I’ve already submitted my required 2 recommendations through the Common Application?

A.  No - we will review your required letters of recommendation along with your scholarship nomination.

Q.  Can my college/guidance counselor nominate more than 5 students for Emory Scholars and Goizueta Scholars?

A.  From each high school, only 4 students can be nominated for Emory Scholars and only 1 student can be nominated for Goizueta Scholars.  To obtain more than 5 nominations, the college/guidance counselor would need to contact our Dean of Admission.
