Interviews
Students may be interested in interviewing with Emory College or Oxford College. For the 2012-2013 application cycle, the Office of Admission is testing a pilot alumni interviewing program. Interviews will be conducted by invitation only. Applicants will be unable to request an interview. Invitations will be extended to Regular Decision candidates after the review of applications have begun. The opportunity to interview will not be extended to Early Decision applicants. Additionally, Emory does not offer on-campus interviews as part of the admission process.In this first year of our program, interviews will be offered in the following ten cities: Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Nashville, Raleigh-Durham, San Francisco, Seattle, and Tampa Bay. These cities have been selected because of the strength of their regional Emory alumni networks. For applicants in these cities, once application review is under way, they may receive an invitation to interview via email. Because applications go through several reviews, it is impossible to predict when or whether an applicant will be invited to an admission interview.
Not all applicants in these cities will be invited to interview as the number of applicants selected will depend on the number of alumni interviewers in each area.
Interviews will be both informative and evaluative. Applicants invited to interview are strongly encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity. Interviews will be conducted by trained alumni in an applicant’s local area and typically will take place in a coffee shop. If an applicant declines an interview invitation, it will not adversely impact the review of their application by the admission committee.
It is important to note that both the selection to be interviewed and the timing of that selection have no bearing on the likelihood of acceptance to Emory or Oxford. Because of the changes to our interviewing program, the majority of applicants across the United States and around the world will not be invited to interview. These applicants in no way will be disadvantaged and the admission committee will closely evaluate applicant essays and recommendations to learn more about a student. For all applicants, admission essays are their voice in the admission process.
A review of this year’s pilot alumni interviewing program will assist the Office of Admission in exploring whether an invitation only as well as an evaluative interview process is an effective and useful tool in our holistic admission selection process. We hope to be able to expand this program in future years to more areas of the United States and abroad, and to accommodate more applicant interviews.
