Varsity

Emory boasts 18 varsity sports teams, which compete in NCAA Division III. As a Division III school, Emory does not award athletic scholarships, and we emphasize the balance between sports and studies, so that our athletes are true scholar-athletes. We're proud that many of our teams are consistently in the national rankings and that our athletes are fully integrated into the academic, social, and cultural life of the University. On the playing field, we enthusiastically cheer them on, led by Swoop, our Emory Eagles mascot.

“Emory University stands for the pursuit of excellence. Emory Athletics is an extension of that. Our student-athletes represent the University with pride and a passion that is required to be successful.

“Balance doesn't mean being average at everything—balance comes from time management, setting priorities, and using your time to attack your goals. Emory student-athletes have an amazing ability to prioritize and to manage time. As pressure and commitments increase, their ability to compartmentalize and focus grows. It is an inspiration to watch these young men and women work and perform.”

“Being a Division III athlete allows me to balance so many different things in my life.  I know this isn’t the case for most college athletes and I’m grateful to be able to participate in activities at Emory while still succeeding as an athlete.

"My coaches truly want [us] to succeed both in the classroom and in the pool. If anyone needs to miss practice for a class or to study for a big test our coaches completely understand and encourage us to take the time to do our schoolwork well. They push us to be the best we can in both settings and that is the number one reason why I chose to be a member of the Emory Swimming and Diving team. ”

“Being an athlete at Emory teaches me to be a complete and balanced individual. An Emory Eagle is an athlete who places as much emphasis on academics as on his or her performance on the field of competition.

“Emory University is a place where student-athletes can excel. The memories shared between teammates and values imposed through the academic rigor and athletic excellence offered by this university are undeniable and unparalleled.”
