Michael J. Mandl, vice president for financial services at Duke University, was named today as executive vice president, finance and administration, for Emory University, effective July 1, 2003.

Emory President William M. Chace made the appointment following a search that began last fall after the incumbent John Temple, following 20 years of service, announced his intention to step down as Emory’s chief financial officer at the end of the current school year.

At Duke, Mandl has served as the chief financial services and budget officer since1999, and is responsible for overseeing the financial division including budgets and analysis, capital budgeting/planning, sponsored research, general accounting operations, external audit and financial reporting, compliance, and university-wide administrative systems.

Mandl led Duke in several institutional strategic initiatives including implementation of a formal capital construction planning and reporting process, and in revamping financial reporting and communications, both internally and to the board of trustees. Mandl also has been instrumental in many administrative initiatives outside of the financial area, and served in leadership roles in Duke's strategic planning efforts.

Mandl previously held other financial management positions at Duke and at the University of Pennsylvania, including a term as vice dean for finance and administration in Penn’s School of Arts & Sciences. Mandl also has served in leadership roles on several not-for-profit boards and community bodies.

Before moving into a career in higher education administration, Mandl had held positions as a certified public accountant (CPA) with KPMG Peat Marwick and as a senior budget, financial and accounting analyst with Glaxo Pharmaceuticals, Inc.

Mandl graduated with distinction from George Washington University with a bachelor of accountancy degree. He holds a master of arts in liberal studies from Duke and has studied business administration, management and organizational theory at the doctoral level at both Duke and the University of Michigan.

Mandl will come to Emory accompanied by his wife, Nancy, and their two children, Michael, age 13, and Grace, age 9.

Comments Regarding Michael Mandl’s Emory Appointment

• Emory President William M. Chace said, “We welcome Mike Mandl to succeed John Temple at Emory. He brings to us an acute intelligence, a firm grasp of the complexities of private higher education in the United States, and a determination and tenacity to understand and then to solve the many fiscal issues that we (along with our national counterparts) will be facing in the coming years. His career at both Duke and the University of Pennsylvania will stand him in good stead as he protects the well-being of this institution.”

• Emory University Board of Trustees Chairman Ben Johnson added his support to the appointment. Said Johnson, “I think that Mike Mandl is the perfect person for the job. He's a KPMG trained CPA who has pursued graduate studies in both the liberal arts and business administration. He's had private sector business experience, but long ago decided that he loved universities and wished to dedicate his skills to their success. Everyone who participated on the search committee felt that Mike has a unique combination of skills, energy and experience to succeed John Temple in this most important role. We are tremendously excited about Mike's appointment and the impact that he can have on Emory's future.”

• Peter Lange, provost at Duke University said, “Mike, working with [executive vice president for administration] Tallman Trask, has been a superb financial leader at Duke. He has worked in a highly cooperative, supportive, intelligent and creative way in assuring that we are able to optimize the financial resources supporting the academic sector.”

• Bill Donelan, executive vice president of Duke University Health System, also praised Mandl. "Mike has been a superb member of our leadership. He is a team builder and a team player with unimpeachable values. Mike understands the academy and Duke's priorities and has worked effectively to enable our collective success."

The appointment is pending approval by Emory University’s Board of Trustees’ Executive Committee on March 13.
