Maps and Parking (2009)

Attention Class of 2010: This page has not yet been updated to reflect 2010 dates and information. Since many of the details will be similar to the 2009 information below, we recommend that you use the information to get a general idea of the responsibilities and activities surrounding Commencement. Please check back for updated 2010 information as it becomes available.
General Information
On Commencement morning, parking is free in all Emory parking decks. See links on right for parking, shuttle, and general campus maps. Please note: For 2009, the Fishburne Parking deck will not be available for general commencement parking.
Traffic signs and officers will direct guests to parking areas. Guests will receive a map of campus and shuttle routes that is color coded to the parking deck, for ease in returning to their autos. Ambassadors and community service officers will be stationed all around campus to answer questions and assist with directions.
All decks
EXCEPT FISHBURNE are served by shuttles equipped to carry wheelchairs. All parking decks provide spaces for accessible parking for vehicles with disabled person parking tags.
PARKING UPDATE (May 1, 2009):
In addition to marked handicap accessible parking spaces in other lots and decks, the Peavine Lot (adjacent to the Peavine Parking Decks) will be reserved for vehicles with valid handicap parking permits.
For those guests who cannot walk easily, a limited number of courtesy carts will travel from the Quadrangle to diploma ceremonies. Ushers on the Quad can direct you to the carts.
Shuttles will serve all diploma ceremony and event venues.
Parking is not assigned by event or school; all parking is first-come, first-served. Guests should plan to arrive early to locate parking and ride Emory shuttles to the Quadrangle. The Peavine deck will fill earliest in the morning.
Emory does not have parking facilities for RV's, buses, or over-sized vehicles.
Please do not park in neighboring business parking lots, do not block neighborhood driveways, and do not park illegally in fire lanes or disabled person permit spaces. Parking rules are strictly enforced.
Special note: If you park in the CVS parking lot in Emory Village, they will boot and tow vehicles.
Guests can avoid the heavy traffic on Clifton Road by parking in the Clairmont Parking Deck. Guests may ride shuttles from Clairmont to all event sites.
School-specific tips:
(updated May 1, 2009)
- Guests who will attend the law school diploma ceremony want to park in the Lowergate South parking deck.
- Guests attending events of the nursing, business, theology, or Emory College want to park in the Peavine and Clairmont Parking Decks. Guests who park in the Clairmont deck will ride shuttles directly to campus.
- Guests who will attend the public health diploma ceremony want to park at the nearby Michael Street Parking Deck and ride shuttles or walk across the pedestrian bridge to the Quadrangle. Nursing guests also may want to park in the Michael Street parking deck.
Message to Emory Community from Transportation Office
(posted May 8, 2009)
Commencement begins at 8:00am on the University Quadrangle, so traffic will begin to build early on Monday morning. Look for traffic on N. Decatur and Clairmont roads to be about double normal capacity until 7:45am or so.
Parking for the events is first-come-first-served, and the Peavine decks and surface parking lot will fill up first. Visitors are also encouraged to park at Clairmont campus and shuttle to main campus, so the Starvine deck at Clairmont campus will fill rapidly, as well.
The Commencement ceremony will end at approximately 9:15am, and graduate students and their guests will leave the quadrangle for other campus venues for their respective diploma ceremonies. Expect lots of pedestrian traffic on Clifton Road as guests walk or shuttle to other events.
The Undergraduate diploma ceremony will end around 12:30pm, so lunchtime traffic will be heavy. Some of the graduate diploma ceremonies will end around the same time, so traffic will be constant, though not necessarily heavy, until 2:00-2:30pm.
Cliff's commuter and hospital routes will run according to their usual schedules, and only a few of the campus routes will be impacted by the day's events. Below is a list of shuttle routes that will be pressed into special service for Monday morning and early afternoon. Use this information to help you plan ahead for traveling to and around the Emory campus and the Clifton Corridor. All shuttles for specific Commencement service will be plainly marked.
- The A route will only operate on the Clifton Corridor between Wesley Woods and the Woodruff Circle Transit Hub from 7:00am-2:00pm, and will accommodate Commencement guests as well as Emory System employees. Regular service will resume at 2:00pm.
- The C route will only serve the Clairmont campus deck, Clinics, and Woodruff Circle. There will be no service to the DUC or Means Drive until 2:00pm. Regular service will resume at 2:00pm.
- The D route will only operate on Eagle Row and Clifton Road between the Peavine decks and Woodruff Circle Transit Hub from 6:00am-2:00pm, and will accommodate Commencement guests as well as Emory System employees. Regular service will resume at 2:00pm
- The E route will not begin until 2:00pm. Regular service will resume at 2:00pm.
- The CHOA route will depart from the S.A.A.C. traffic circle on the Clairmont campus. Regular service will resume at 2:00pm.
- The VA Regional Office route will depart from the S.A.A.C. traffic circle on the Clairmont campus from 6:15am-7:45am and depart from VARO from 3:00pm-4:30pm.
