Waste Reduction
Emory Dining is proud to contribute 200 gallons of cooking oil each week to be converted into bio-fuel used by the Emory transportation system. (Source: Southern Alliance of Clean Energy)
Weigh the Waste Composting Program
This is a program designed to educate our customers about composting and food waste.
Trayless Dining
Emory University has mandated trayless dining at the Oxford College Campus. We have reduced waste by 14,500 tons.
Vegan/Vegetarian Dining
Vegetarian food choices are available at every station throughout all dining locations. A vegan station was added to the resident dining hall, Dining at Dobbs. Vegan dishes are available per request from each format as well.
Trans fat information
Emory Dining does not use oils with trans fat. Nutritional information is available on our website and at dining locations.
Sustainable Food Fair
Emory Dining participated in the third annual Sustainable Food Fair on October 7th, 2008. The event featured White Oak Pastures grassfed beef, now available at Cafe` Antico and Dooley's Den at the Depot.
Sustainable Food Service Education Coordinator
After thirty years as a public high school teacher, Julie Shaffer is beginning a new career as Emory's Sustainable Food Service Education Coordinator. Julie has been hired by Emory Dining to educate the Emory community about sustainable food, how it's different, and why it's important. She is founder and leader of Slow Food Atlanta, a non-profit, educational organization dedicated to sustainable food issues, and she is southeastern regional governor of Slow Food USA. As well, she is involved in the Atlanta Local Food Initiative, Georgia Organics, and many other civic organizations. At Emory, Julie has created a Slow Food on Campus chapter, she works with the Culinary Club, and several other student groups. Julie is educating the faculty and staff through staff development activities, food events and lectures. She oversees the Emory Farmers Market and the Demonstration kitchen in Few Hall.
