Bio-Fuel

Since 2006, used cooking oil and grease from the dining areas has been collected by Southern Alliance for Clean Energy (SACE) for processing into biodiesel fuel. Biodiesel is a cleaner burning fuel for diesel engines. Biodiesel is produced from domestic, renewable resources like natural oils, food service vegetable oil, algae and other oil sources. At Emory, we collect used cooking oil to create a B20 blend of biodiesel, which is 20% cooking oil blended with conventional diesel.  It can be used in compression-ignition (diesel) engines with little or no modifications and results in less particulate matter and greenhouse gas emissions.  We use the B20 biodiesel to power nearly half of our Cliff shuttle fleet. The rest of the fleet is electric, or runs on compressed natural gas.

Emory Dining contributes an average of 200 gallons of used cooking oil per week for bio-fuel processing.
