Message from the Director

Fall semester began a couple of weeks ago and everyone has settled into the rhythm of attending class, going to meetings, and participating in various campus activities.

Last winter when we surveyed the membership, one of the suggested additions to our programming was the development of regular social activities. We could offer some of the activities described in the July issue of AROHE Matters (e.g., hiking, tour of an art museum, a picnic, etc.), if members are willing to assist Dianne and me make the necessary arrangements. I’d like to suggest we start with one social activity during fall semester, perhaps a tour of the Carlos Museum, a play at the Atlanta Shakespeare Tavern, or an evening concert at the Schwartz Center.

Our fall series of Lunch Colloquiums will begin on Monday, September 11 at 11:30 am with a presentation entitled “Full Circle: A Personal Journey,” by Anna Leo, Emerit Professor of Dance. She will discuss what inspires her choreographic process and show how dance-making and mandala-making intersect. As a special treat, she will guide us in creating our own paper mandalas (if you anticipate attending via Zoom, email Anna Leo far enough in advance and she will send you a “mandala kit”).

The focus on the performing arts will continue Tuesday, September 26 at 10:00, when we will assemble in Alumni Hall (Miller Ward House) for a presentation entitled “Good…Better…Best! Timothy Albrecht Performs at the Piano and Illustrates Selections from Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier Volume 2.” Based on his presentation last year, you can anticipate that his presentation will be humorous, informative, and accessible to even non-musicians.

I’m very appreciative of Ann Hartle and Marilynne McKay for editing and proofreading this issue of the newsletter. I also wish to thank our Zoom team members (Gray Crouse, Ron Gould, and Vernon Robbins) who have agreed to continue for another year.

--Ann

Lunch Colloquium -- Monday, September 11, 2023

Full Circle: A Personal Journey”

Anna Leo

Emerit Associate Professor of Dance

Monday, September 11, 2023

11:30-1:00pm

I first became curious about mandalas in college when I read about Carl Jung’s connection to them. Since that time, I have continued to read about and seek out the shape in myriad forms. I have watched Tibetan monks work on sand mandalas both at Emory and in India; and I participated in planting the living mandala on Emory’s campus. In 2017 I began designing and constructing mandalas during a residency at the Hambidge Center in North Georgia. Through my exploration of mandalas, I have come to recognize the form’s presence in my choreographic work. My dances often build upon circular patterns, squares, and intricate spatial patterning. I like to think that I am on a continual arcing, creative pathway in investigating mandalas--first creating them in space through dance making, and now on paper. I view my mandala making as an intersection between play, art, and meditative practice.

In this presentation I will briefly talk about how choreographers in general find inspiration, what inspires my own choreographic process, and how dance-making and mandala-making intersect. Best of all, we will each make our own paper mandala! No previous art experience required, and I will supply all needed materials. If you are attending via ZOOM, a “mandala kit” can be mailed to you if you contact me in advance. aleo@emory.edu

Walking the Campus with Dianne

A new semester! More walking!

Let's start with something new in an old (but updated) space.

These chairs are quite modern and a big improvement over what used to be offered in this space. Hint: Most of you have visited this building for some of our Emeritus programs....and it's not the Luce Center!

Where will you find these on the Emory campus?
