The Emeritus College is a professional organization, sponsored by the Office of the Provost, which is open to all faculty at Emory University who are retired or who are considering retirement. The purpose of the Emeritus College is to provide intellectual and service opportunities within the University and the wider community. Please note that it is not necessary to be a faculty member with emeritus status in order to belong to the Emeritus College of Emory University. While the Emeritus College provides an organizational base for official University ties, it does not have a role in formulating policy regarding emeritus status or appointing emeritus faculty. If you are a faculty member who is retiring and would like more information concerning emeritus status, please contact the appropriate department chair or dean.
The title "Professor Emeritus" refers to a male emeritus professor. In this case it is capitalized, being part of the title. The title for the female equivalent is "Professor Emerita," being the feminine form of the "Emeritus" title. However, the word "emeritus" may also be used as an adjective, in which case it is not gendered or capitalized (e.g. "Are there many emeritus professors affiliated with your department?"). The title of our organization is not meant to refer only to male professors, therefore, but is used as an adjective. As Professors Emeriti/Emeritae, many of our regular members have reached emeritus status.
