What can I do to stay healthy?

Symptoms of novel H1N1 influenza are similar to seasonal influenza and include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. Some people have also reported diarrhea and vomiting.

Emory encourages students, faculty and staff to to take the necessary precautions to remain healthy. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) stresses the importance of following the same type of hygiene recommended to help stem the spread of all flu-like illnesses, including:

  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, throw the tissue in the trash after use, and wash your hands with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand cleaner. If you don't have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your elbow or upper arm, not your hand.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth as germs are spread this way.
  • Try to avoid close contact with people who appear to be ill as influenza is thought to spread mainly person-to-person through a coughing and sneezing
  • Regularly wash your hands with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand cleaner, especially afer you cough or sneeze.
